The Cybersecurity Rundown: October 5, 2020

Oct 5, 2020 10:57:41 AM

Here's a quick rundown of some of the top cybersecurity stories in the world. Here are some great examples of why you need to stay up-to-date with what is happening digitally!

New Phishing Scheme Targets Voters

There has been a lot of controversy this election cycle, and this new phishing scheme doesn’t help. Cybercriminals are taking advantage of voters by sending fraudulent emails that claim that the victim’s voter registration is incomplete. This lure is designed to look like an official email from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, and prompt the victim to enter personal information to “finish” their registration process. If there are any red flags, just remember: when in doubt, throw it out!

How Cybersecurity Education Can Shape the Future

There are millions of cyberthreats in existence, with hundreds, if not thousands, of new threats emerging daily. These threats target everyone from consumers to government agencies and everyone in between. Certifications, education, and training are tools that we can use to combat this rapid growth of threats with some progress of our own. Using these tools can encourage more professionals to join the field, as well as provide a baseline knowledge for all, on how to utilize safe cyber practices.

Google Now Protects Some Users from Malicious Files/Emails

Google’s Advance Protection program recently rolled out a new feature. Those involved with the program can now end suspicious data to be reviewed by Google’s Safe Browsing malware detection software. While this technology was previously only capable of blocking or flagging the same malicious data, this new feature is promising and seems to potentially benefit everyone. Aside from cybercriminals, that is.
