Making a Case for Holiday Security

Nov 3, 2020 7:30:00 AM

Deloitte’s annual 2020 holiday retail forecast predicts, “E-commerce sales will grow by 25% to 35%, year-over-year, during the 2020-2021 holiday season, compared to sales increasing by 14.7% in 2019. E-commerce holiday sales are expected to generate between $182 billion and $196 billion this season.” Those are staggering numbers! As a result, people will have more packages delivered to their homes this year than ever before. Unfortunately, package theft will also be at an all-time high. It’s the most wonderful time of the year — for porch theft.

Now is the time for your business to speak up and present your case for negating package theft. The demand for video doorbells and outdoor video cameras has never been greater.

Porch Pirates

Package theft from homes, porches, and mailboxes through any means other than violence or fraud is classified as larceny theft, along with shoplifting, stealing from vehicles, etc. Because of the recent explosive increase in package theft, it has been given its own unique term: “porch pirate.” Security.org predicts a 40% increase in package thefts this year based on a survey of 1,500 people.

An Ounce of Prevention

Video Doorbells and Cameras: A house without a home security system is 300% more likely to get burglarized, according to the New York Times. And burglars admit that they often won’t even attempt to burglarize a home if they see cameras. Video doorbells and outdoor video cameras help prevent package theft.

Of course, some package thieves are bolder than others. But with video doorbells and outdoor cameras, homeowners will have video verification if they do have a package stolen. They can share this information with local law enforcement or with the seller of the product that was stolen to hopefully have the goods replaced or refunded.

Security Signs: Signs that state a house is protected by a security system also go a long way in preventing packages from getting stolen, or even worse, the house being burglarized. Your customers will appreciate knowing how a sign alone can protect their home. Not only will it provide your customer with added confidence, but it also gives your business some free exposure.

Sharing this information with your current and potential customers will keep their holiday cheers from turning into holiday woes.
