This is the perfect time of year for family members to assess the health and safety needs of their aging loved ones. Although many family gatherings have been interrupted by COVID-19 this year, any type of holiday interaction can serve as an opportune time to evaluate the well-being and health of their parents or grandparents.
Help Them Know What to Look For
Addressing the needs of loved ones in their declining years can be difficult for both the caregiver and the care recipient. For adult children, it can be difficult to recognize the signs of failing health, especially if they don’t know what to look for. And for aging adults, it may feel as though they are losing bits of their independence. But addressing their needs now could enable them to live longer, happier, healthier lives for many years to come. Here are some signs family members can watch for:
- Signs of falling or difficulty with mobility
- Persistent fatigue or sleeplessness
- Vision or hearing problems
- Complaints of pain
- Decline in personal hygiene and overall appearance
- Unusual weight loss or gain
- Signs of depression, sadness, or loneliness
- Increased anxiety
- Decreased interest in hobbies

Some of the above concerns may be a good indicator that a loved one is a good candidate for a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS).
