SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Mental health patients and guns do not go well together.
On January 4th at 6am, Theron pressed his button. An operator didn't get a clear response from him, so she followed protocol for Theron and sent his Hospice service to check on him.
Jackie, a hospice worker, walked in on Theron, waving a gun around like it was toy. He was agitated, frustrated, and clearly not in a healthy mental state. She decided to wait outside of the home for further instruction from her supervisor. AvantGuard team member Emilie called Jacklyn to update her that he had pressed his button again. Emilie knew that the safest thing to do would be to send the police with the paramedics.
Jacklyn told Emilie that something had triggered a mental episode that caused him to believe that he had been trapped in his basement all night and no one came to help him.
Somehow Theron had gotten his hands on a gun and had fired shots into the wall of his room. Worried for Jacklyn’s safety, Emilie waited on the line with her until police had arrived.
Upon arrival, the police had Jacklyn wait outside while they disarmed Theron and secured the situation. Thankfully no one was harmed.
The police then escorted Theron to the hospital to be tended to properly.
Jacklyn’s boss Heather, later told AvantGuard that she was very grateful to have our help with Theron. "It was nice to know that she wasn’t alone in the situation. Thank you for your help.”
Theron’s family later thanked AvantGuard for their help in getting him to the hospital.
