Voters from all over the state of Utah are signing a referendum on Utah’s food tax bill. Out of 116,000 votes needed, they are only 4,000 away from sending the bill to a public vote. Many Utah voters were unhappy when the bill was presented, and voters have been showing up in droves to stop it from going into effect.
Today, groups of Avantguard employees went to our local grocery stores to sign the petition. At 5 p.m. on January 21, 2020, the petitions will close, votes will be counted, and a decision will be made in the following days.
If the threshold is met and the referendum qualifies, it will stall the implementation of the food tax bill until November and force an up or down vote among the people. This vote will hopefully force lawmakers back to the drawing board.
Even though the deadline is approaching fast, head to the nearest Harmons Grocery and Associated Food Stores before 5 p.m. to sign the petition. The only requirement is that you must be a registered voter.
