Hurricane Harvey Hero

HOUSTON, TX- Logan, an AvantGuard operator, glanced at the most recent broadcast about Hurricane Harvey. His phone rang into silence when nobody picked up. A repeat of the past ten unanswered phone calls, he hung up again and took another phone number from the dwindling list. The ringing tone suddenly died,  and Logan’s heart skipped a beat when a tired voice answered on the other line- the Red Cross disaster hotline. “I have a medical alarm going off in Houston, Texas.” He quickly began, “An old woman is stuck in her apartment, and it’s filling with water. She can’t walk, and her electric wheelchair has stopped working, so she can’t get out on her own. I can’t get ahold of Houston dispatch at all, and I need someone to get over there before she drowns.” The Red Cross representative gave L ...

Citizen’s Arrest

Renton, WA – Reid sat in his cousin’s home one summer night as an alarm went off in his own home, less than a mile away. Seconds later, Reid, who was unaware of the situation, received a call from Carlos, the operator who responded to the signal. “There is an alarm going off in zone two. Do you want me to dispatch?” asked Carlos. “No,” replied Reid, “please keep the alarm going, I’m only two minutes away.” Carlos acknowledged Reid’s request and waited on the line for an update on the situation for over three minutes, knowing that each second was vital considering the potential situation. Once Reid arrived on scene, Carlos could hear a dog barking loudly atop the sound of the screaming alarm. Seconds later, shouts made their way into the chaos as Reid began yelling at an unknown subject. Re ...

Video Verification Victory

While commuting home from work, Sam received a notification on his phone from his live video feed. The video revealed two masked intruders entering his boat and RV storage property.   Seconds after receiving the notification, Sam got a call from Vanessa, the central station operator who received the alarm signal.   Just after Vanessa updated him on the situation, Sam advised her to “Dispatch immediately,” and even repeated himself with urgency,“Dispatch immediately.”   Because Sam had verified the two intruders on his video feed, he knew exactly what needed to happen, making the process of dispatching police much faster.   “I get false alarms all of the time,” said Sam regarding his storage business. “This time, I saw two guys who weren’t supposed to be there, and I tol ...

A Shocking Situation

White House, TN   Sheree was leaving her house one morning when she accidentally put her car into drive instead of reverse.   Because she was in her garage, the tap on the accelerator sent her car into her living room, rupturing the water heater and dismantling the breaker box from the wall.   The frayed, active wires sent sparks as they touched and began edging closer to the water flowing from the water heater.   In telling her story, Sheree said, “I panicked! I didn’t know what to do.”   Luckily, she had purchased a Belle mPERS device a few months earlier and was able to press the button to get immediate help.   “The response was wonderful. I didn’t have my glasses, so I couldn’t use my phone, and the woman I spoke to (Liz) was so quick and easy to hear. I k ...

Con Caught on Camera

Ontario, CA   All of the employees were at home for the night when the car wash was broken into.   No one was walking on the nearby street to see what was happening, and the darkness of the night made it especially difficult to see clearly.   Because the business had video surveillance integrated I-View Now software, the operator who responded to the alarm saw the perpetrator’s face before anyone else, over 1400 miles away.   “When the motion sensor went off, I saw the footage on my monitor right away and I could tell dispatch exactly what I saw,” said Liz, an AvantGuard operator.   She continues, “A lot of cities won’t send police if I can’t verify there was an actual person breaking in.”   According to “ ...
