AvantGuard Operator’s quick response helps save lives in Washington Fire

GRAHAM, Wash. — A smoldering cigarette butt ignited a two-alarm blaze at an assisted living facility late Wednesday afternoon, according to fire officials.
Graham fire officials said the blaze broke out inside a room in the north wing of the facility at around 5:45 p.m. Fire crews were dispatched to the facility by AvantGuard Monitoring Centers Central Station Operator Marissa Guerrero who received the fire alarm signal.
“There was heavy smoke coming out of the roof,” said Graham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jay Espionsa, “so we were very concerned.”
When firefighters arrived at the facility at 21520 82nd Ave. E., they found a lone staff member battling the flames with a fire extinguisher. The person was coughing excessively but was not seriously injured, Franz said.
The flames were contained to the single room and quickly doused.
The adult residential care facility houses 46 people with mental or physical disabilities all of whom require 24-hour care.
Facility administrator Toni Anderson said trouble began with one resident collecting cigarette butts
“He had scrounged a cigarette butt that obviously wasn’t out, and put it in his pocket. And then (he) put his coat in that closet,” said Anderson.
Fire investigators said that butt smoldered for a time until the entire closet burst into flames.
A staff member rushed into the room to put it out, but the smoke was so thick that she couldn’t find her way back out. Firefighters rushed in to rescue her.
“They could see somebody inside through the smoke. And they went in there, got her out,” Espinosa said.
A sprinkler system slowed the fire, then firefighters did the rest.
Staff at the facility said they’d trained for these types of emergencies, but it was still quite an ordeal for their patients.
“Very scary, especially for people with dementia,” said Anderson, “all the lights coming, and the noises with the alarms going off.”
Eleven patients were displaced from their rooms, but were given other accommodations on site.

AvantGuard VP of Strategic Development recognized as one of Security Systems News’ “Top 20 under 40″ for 2011

| Justin Bailey entered the security industry through the increasingly wide IT side door, and frankly admits “security was never on my radar,” even though he worked briefly for Honeywell in its non-security related systems department. “I owned a technology consulting firm and that’s how I got my start with Mountain Alarm, one of AvantGuard’s sister companies,” Bailey says. “I worked for four years as a consultant for AvantGuard, taking care of their technology, database and development needs and it grew into full time.” Given his background, it’s not surprising Bailey wants to leverage new technology in order to tap new blood. “There’s a lot of older, legacy technologies in use and there just are better ways to do things,” Bailey says. “I’d like to be part of moving the industry into the 21st century—not worry so much about how things were done as how they should be done going forward.” “It all comes back to technology. So many young people today are very technologically savvy,” Bailey continues. “When we start using technologies that are exciting and cool and speak to the abilities and knowledge of this younger generation, they’ll show up.” Security Systems News |
